The problem with Scotland...

Scotland roadsideAs a place, Scotland is probably as close to perfection as you will find anywhere on the planet. It has everything you can possibly want - from the scenery of the lochs, glens, mountains, rivers (and thats not just on the mainland, many of the islands have all these to offer as well).

However, Scotland is not perfect.
The weather is usually what people complain about! "Its too cold," they say. Or "its too wet" is another complaint! Well, yes, it is both those things, but thats due to Scotland being closer to the north pole than the equator! If its too cold them make sure you have something to keep you warm - be it clothes to wrap up in or a fire to drink your dram in front of! As for the rain, be thankful for that as it keeps the lochs full and the rivers flowing - can you imagine how boring the waterfalls would be after a prolonged drought?

Another complaint is the dreaded midgies! This annoying insect is Scotland's first and only defence against invaders, but they can be avoided if not stopped! Common sense suggests that if they annoy you then stay away from them - or try one of the many deterrants!

However, forget the cold and the rain and the midgies as there is something else that stops Scotland from being perfect... the time! Scotland closes sometime around 5 and 6 pm depending on the season! In some cases it can be even sooner and in a few cases it may be later!

ok its not actually Scotland that closes - that is open 24-7 even on Bank Holidays and at Christmas & New Year! No its the attractions that close... and normally you can't get in within 1/2 an hour of closing! Now I am not suggesting that these places stay open 24-7, but it would be nice if you could go and wander round a castle or some other attraction in the evening instead of being left to spend the latter hours of the day sitting in the pub! Lets face it, you're not going to get a chance to wander through the glens and over the hills if its too cold and wet - and sunsets are either not visible due to the clouds or don't start getting nice until later on (which is something you may have to consider if the camp site you're staying at closes its gates early!)

Anyway, this is a minor gripe... but one I have been known to make from time to time! Let me know what you think...
