Edinburgh Castle cheaper?
Sunday, October 08 2006
Historic Scotland, the government agency that manages Edinburgh's landmark castle (and another 300 sites across the country), is considering a cut in ticket prices at the popular tourist attraction as a way of increasing visitor numbers. Currently, it costs £10.30 for an adult to see round the various buildings on the castle rock. There is so much to see, tourists could easily spend an entire day there, so maybe the charge isn't as high as it looks at first sight. But last year there was a drop in numbers - to
1.27 million people. The organisation thinks that was due to the G8 summit last year, which discouraged people from going to Edinburgh (and Stirling) castles due to threatened and actual demonstrations by activists. Plans that are being looked at include having cheaper entry after 4pm and reduced charges in the winter. In the picture the changing of the guards at Edinburgh Castle.
