A Cool Place, but No Ice
Sunday, February 26 2006
We visited Mull early in the trip. Being a fan of the BBC series "All Creatures Great and Small," we knew the reputation of Tobermory Smoked Salmon.... We picked up some, thinking we could put it on ice and keep it frozen during the trip and return home. It turns out, we couldn't find a place that sold ice in September in Scotland. We spent the next two weeks trying to keep the fish from spoiling as it slowly thawed. Since the sun was still enough to warm the inside of the car, we'd carry the packages when we stopped to stoll around or do some sightseeing. We referred to it as walking the fish. Finally, in Pitlochry, we found a story that sold an insulated fabric bag and our hotel, popular with people who came to fish, refroze the packages for us. We were able to enjoy the rest of the trip without worry. We still have that insulated bag today and use it regularly. And we still call the bag Walk the Fish.
